TWO MOURNING DOVES

DSC_0183 -1_edited-1 2

Two mourning doves
how sad their song–
its melody echoes
all the day long.
No heart can rest,
no tears will dry.
Their song is haunting
like words of goodbye.
Does a loved one sleep
on yonder hill
where roses have faded
and the breeze is still?
A melody echoes
all the day long—
two mourning doves
how sad their song!

This is lovely, Freeda. And beautiful that you wrote for your sister, and now this day, too. I had losses this past year, and still think of them every day.

    • Thanks, Coleen. Doves do have a mournful sound. This post is a tribute to my sister, who died Feb. 23, 2014 at the age of 94. The roses in the photo were on her grave. This poem was included on the program for her funeral. I wrote it a few days before she passed. It just worked out that it was shared at her funeral. I had not intended that, but I’m honored that family and friends shared it.
